McCain favors S. Dakota abortion ban

From National Journal:

A spokesperson said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., would have signed the South Dakota legislation, “but [he] would also take the appropriate steps under state law — in whatever state — to ensure that the exceptions of rape, incest or life of the mother were included.” (Exactly how such “steps” would be received by this bill’s sponsors remains unclear).

Anyone still think he’s pro-choice? Bueller?

As someone who judges people on their deeds, if we’ve learned anything from the Alito and, to a lesser extent, Roberts nominations, there are no pro-choice Republicans. They don’t exist. They may have at one time, but they don’t now.

McCain’s “bi-partisanship” has been the most effective political smokescreen for the last 7 years.

    I don’t hate McCain, but he’s not a bi-partisan. He’s a conservative through and through.

I think McCain is good at finding conservative Democrats to back up his plans and then calling them a biaprtisan effort. You have to admit that’s pretty brilliant when most people don’t look beyond the R or D next to someone’s name.

Also the latest Federal Budget cut funding for Child Support collection funding. So SD voted in the Rapist Bill of Rights for fetal protection plus get off scott free from paying child support due to definding enforcement?
    Wow… such values..

Everyone will be a good, responsible person now, Katy! They’ll have exactly as many children as they want, exactly when they want them! And birth control will never fail.

Given that Congress is full of people who have far more children than the average couple, I wonder if they’re living in the same world as the rest of us.

Interesting what DesertRat said about the pro-choice Republicans. Indeed…I wonder where they are? Independent now? Are they sitting on their hands or were they driven from the party like the LogCabin Republicans were in the 80s after the Christian Coalition?

That tent of theirs appears to be getting smaller and smaller…but I am not sure we are seeing the Democrat tent getting bigger and bigger. Why?

Roger, I think that the recent surge of independent voters can be attributed to 1) the parties not really doing anything for voters anymore (like they did in the 1800s, providing housing and such) and 2) the polar-opposite stratification between the two parties (if the Democrats take up global warming as an issue, Republicans feel that they need to debunk it. Just about every issue has come to this). Most voters don’t cling to the edges of the spectrum.

Personally, I would love to get rid of the party system altogether. It serves no purpose anymore.

I also have a comment on the elusive pro-choice Republican. If you look at the way they structure their party, a pro-choicer would never speak out. Go against the flow? That’s not acceptable to the right – they even destroy their own who step out of line. However on the liberal side independance is accepted and even celebrated. Dems are struggling now because they can. Unless all my concervative friends are liars, so are the Repugs – but silently.
